Before you jump into the world of food photography, it's best to consider doing some background research. Let this be the first place you step!
Take a picture from an intriguing angle. People are used to viewing food at an angle that is downwards, given the table's height is lower than the eye level. Try a different perspective on how you would like your customers to perceive food.
Give food a dimension by shooting from the table level. This means you will be able to really highlight the size of that huge chocolate cake or the weight of that succulent steak. Moving down to plate level will also enhance the texture and the detail that overhead shots lack.
Cut the cake into pieces! Although the chocolate cake looks amazing when placed on a cake stand, cutting a slice of it to reveal its thickness and texture will take your photo to the next level.
Don't be afraid to go close and crop your way in. One great way to bring attention to the food is to remove all other distractions. If food is the main focus of your photograph, be sure to use only those elements that are essential to highlight the focus.
