After the tires and valves are removed from the wheels, they must be cleaned thoroughly. Pressure washing is usually the best way to remove dirt and grime. Some shops use sand blasting to make sure the bike is completely free of dirt.
The wheels are then dipped in a chemical solution to remove the old coat of paint. After the paint has been removed, the wheels require additional cleaning and drying in preparation for powder coating.
Powder coating is applied with a compressed air gun. The material is pushed through the nozzle and receives a positive charge. The wheel is grounded to attract positive particles.
After the powder coating has been applied, a heat treatment must be carried out to fuse the particles and adhere to the surface. The wheels go into the curing oven, after which it will take a while to cool.
Ideally, each of the steps above should take no more than 40 minutes. Thus, the total time it takes to apply powder coating to a wheel is approximately 2 hours. Powder coating on four wheels for customer cars takes no more than one day, even if someone works one by one.
