Hand winches are a good tool. Whether you are pulling four wheeler or ATV from dirt or lift up hay bales, there is a winch that can help you lift the load safely and easily.
However, the hand winch is still a tool and must be used safely. If you are new to hand winches or just need a little refresher, here are some security tips for using your winch.

First, always know before you use the weight of the winch for what you pull and how many winches you can support. If the load is too heavy, you can use a snatch block or two separate winches.
Fortunately, most of the winch today is equipped with a sliding pin that liberates freely when you load your winch with the allocated capacity. If possible load up your ATV or off road vehicles with all the equipment that you plan to use, including food and fuel and have it weighed at a weigh station.
Doing this will tell you how many winches you need to lift, sometimes up to a thousand pounds more than the actual vehicle weight! When you actually use a winch, always try to run a line as fast as possible to reduce stress on the winch and cable and also to make the winching process easier on yourself.
